MEETINGS
The cultural,
linguistic and religious diversity of the various peoples of Europe constitutes a
priceless wealth which deserves protection, peace and the respect of minorities.
The hope of seeing the birth of a united, pacified and democratic Greater
Political Europe is taking shape today in people's minds and represents the aim being
pursued by many European institutions.
The Paneuropean Movement, founded by Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, has been
striving, since 1923, to unite all European states into a body, whose members should
strengthen each other, while still maintaining their individual identities and special
characteristics.
In order to achieve this aim, the Swiss section of the Paneuropean
Movement advocates, as an initial step, holding a Paneuropean Conference at a national
level for reactivating the coming together of a Greater Europe and establishing its
foundations in peace, democracy and respect of minorities.
The bringing about of this united
Greater Europe is the principal aim of the
Coudenhove-Kalergi Meetings of Gstaad.
Personalities from various spheres, political, diplomatic, economic,
university and cultural, who are concerned about the continent's future, propose themes of
European interest and discuss them with the public.
The first Meeting took place on 9 and 10 September 1994, on the 100th
anniversary of Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi's birth, the theme being "Greater
Europe : Utopia or future reality ?". The second Meeting took place on 5 and 6
September 1997, the theme being "Greater Europe : a policy for all Europeans".
In order to pursue the study of this theme more deeply, a third Meeting on
"Greater Europe : the political union of Pan-Europe in the 21st
Century", will take place on 3 and 4 September 1999. The Meeting is organized by the
International Paneuropean Union and by the Coudenhove-Kalergi Foundation which has awarded
posthumously the 1999 Coudenhove-Kalergi European Award to Yehudi Menuhin.
It will again be held in Gstaad, a meeting point of the Latin and Germanic
cultures, where Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi lived for a long time, where he organized the
first meetings of European Members of Parliament and where he is buried.
